Thoughts Behind Becoming

Thoughts Behind Becoming

I’ve been reading writings by Heraclitus of  “You cannot bath in the same river twice because it’s not the same river and you’re not the same person” fame.

He thinks fire is the basis of nature.

One of his big ideas is that change is unavoidable and the only constant.

He also talks about “The unity of opposites”.

He doesn’t talk about “Being” but about “Becoming”.

This has struck a chord with me and I have named one of my latest sculptures “Becoming” and another “Transformation”. ‘Becoming’ came from looking at the sunset from the beach and sketching a cloud (see sketch).

‘Transformation’ is based on making something stable which looks unstable.

I have nearly finished another on this theme which has more movement and looks perhaps more unstable. ‘Becoming’ is in a cloudy grey marble, “Transformation” is in statuary with ‘flame’ shadows in it.

I’ve also completed a figurative piece: “Fire” second of a series of four standing female figures.
